RESC 098: Christianity & Sustainability; Discovering Nature

April 3, 2017 By Jeff Tolbert

Course: RESC 098: Christianity & Sustainability; Discovering Nature
Faculty: Alf Siewers and Chris Camuto
DP&S Liaison: Brianna Derr
Date: Fall 2016

Professors Alf Siewers and Chris Camuto teamed up again this fall to teach Christianity and Sustainability and Discovering Nature as part of a Environmental Residential College. Students formed groups of 4 or 5 to create documentary films or digital essays on topics such as sustainability, fly fishing, Centralia, the legend of Hairy John, and Native American Elders.

Students developed treatments and scripts, learned interviewing techniques, lighting setups, and camera and audio techniques. They conducted fieldwork among real people who are trying to make positive impacts in the world. One student film entitled “The Toxic Truth of Tire Burning” was featured on a faculty-built website to help deter the construction of a tire burning facility in White Deer, PA.

“Campus Sustainability: The Orange and Blue Going Green”

Environmental Res Students highlight campus wide sustainability, who’s doing it and how to get involved.

“Sustainable Fly-Fishing”

This is a documentary highlighting the pros and cons of fly-fishing in Central PA.
